Category: Getting to Know You

Post 1 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Friday, 07-Apr-2006 15:38:31

Let me begin by saying hello to everybody.

I joined this bbs a couple of days ago and have been looking around, posting a few innocuous replies to other posts, heck, I even posted a couple of jokes in the joke board.

Firstly, I am totally blind--ROP--and have a genuine hate/love relationship with my blindness. It is what it is, but it's not all that I am, if you know what I mean.

I am sixty years old, a little self-conscious about it, but it's not my fault. Even if it were, I don't think I'd change it.

I have spent most of my life working with computers. I was a programmer for thirty-five years, and an assistive technology specialist for seven years. So I guess you might say that I like computer technology.

I recently retired, and find myself with lots of time and very little money, therefore, I peruse sites like this BBS. I've also started spending a lot of time checking out the blogs around the blogosphere.

Politically, I am very liberal. I was a hippy in the sixties, and never quite out grew it. In fact, my favorite book is "Stranger in a Strange Land" by Robert Heinlein. If you haven't read it, give it a try.

I was married for twenty-five years, and then my ex- and I went our separate ways. We still speak, we still argue but it's now like an argument you might have with a friend. So, I guess that's okay.

I have three kids, two of them in their twenties, and a son who's eight years old.

Okay, I have some questions about the site, and hope I can get advice here.

Let's start with the games: you see where my priorities lie. What happens if you run out of points? I have built on the five hundred points you get for signing up, but, I've been to Los Vagas, and know that one bad hand of something can wipe you out. So, if that happens, what can you do?

About the quick notes: I see these things that say "ignore XXX" where X is a user name. What does that do? Am I going to piss someone off royally if I "ignore" them just to see what it does? Also, right now, I'm not really part of the conversations that go on, so is there a way to turn them off?

I guess that's all for now.

I want to finish by saying that I've looked around quite a bit, and everyone seems up front and friendly. It's kind of like going back to a blind school reunion: you don't have to explain why your eyes don't work, or anything like that. You just have to interact with folks as if they were just folks.

Okay, I've rambled on for quite a while and will quit before I say something else stupid.

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the site. My name is Becky. Let me see if I can at least answer a few of your questions. You get points just for logging in each day. Plus, if you play the anagram game each day you can get an immediate 100 points just for getting 10 words. If you want to shell out 25 bucks for premium membership, then you get to play another anagram game each day and get another 100 points immediately for getting 10 words on that game. Also, the game Keno does not penalize you if you have fewer than 500 points, so you can play that and hope to gain some points there. You can also answer questions on the quiz system. You get 5 points for each quiz you take. Now for the quicknotes. You can go into your account settings and turn off all quicknotes. But if you just want to toggle back and forth between public and private quicknotes, go to the field where you would type a quicknote and type /togqn. You can also type /help in that field and get a list of the other shortcuts. Now for the question about ignoring people. If you enter on the ignore so-and-so link you then have the choice of ignoring just their quicknotes or their private messages, or their board posts. Or if you really can't stand a person, you can ignore everything.

Hope this helped.

Bob, I accidentally ignored someone today. Happilly, you can go in to your account settings and change them. Although we've exchanged several comments, let me welcome you belatedly.
